Tokyo had an area of 110.8 sqare miles. Five raids; 10 March, 13 April, 15 April, 23 May, and 25 May destroyed 56.3 sq. mi. or 50.8 % of the city. When we first arrived in Tokyo, many residents of the city were living in the subways.

The trolley system was soon operating. The cars were always completely filled and people hung on the outside. Army personnel in uniform could generally ride in the compartment with the trolley operator.
